Cork

Today it hasn't rained yet! That's the biggest piece of news today. I only had 40 kilometers of cycling today, because I did a bit overtime yesterday. The way to Cork was still not easy. The N25 is not really bicycle friendly. It looks like a motorway and the exits from and to it were not so easy and safe to navigate for someone with just two wheels and no engine. I made it in one piece though, but for the first time after the left side shock in the beginning, I was a little afraid.

Some quick details about Cork:
- Irelands third biggest city
- River Lee runs through the city and the city center is an island between two channels
- Just like in Waterford and Dublin, there used to be a Viking settlement in Cork in the tenth century.

The city looked too nice to leave today, so I booked a bed in a hostel. (I know, I'm slacking...) After unpacking, I did a long walk trough the city and took a bunch of nice pictures.

Before I went to the city I actually first went the opposite way, out of the city up the hill behind the hostel. That's where I took the pictures  named Cork from above.

The first destination in the city was the microbrewery "Franciscan well". The problem was, that it hadn't opened yet. I continued my way to a park where the street art world championship takes place today and tomorrow. I followed two funny artists, a juggler and a unicyclist. The latter was actually more interested in insulting people than riding his wheel.

I walked through the English market, which reminded me of the old market hall in Helsinki harbor. At lot of small counters selling some very exquisite and fine products. Everything from t-shirts to meat can be purchased there.

Now I'm on a charging/blogging break at the hostel. I just uploaded today's photos. Some more may follow latter. I updated the map as well. For some reason Google maps can't show it on one page so you need to click to page 2 to follow my tracks after Waterford.

I'll soon head to try out the local craft beer in the small brewery pub. Maybe they'll open the door for me this time. Sláinte!

  1. I like Cork more than Dublin. So far Cork is the city in Ireland I'd most like to live in. The feeling here is somehow more to my taste. Can't explain it better.

Took some nice pictures in the evening from the brewery and St. Annes church.
